Heat load and capacity planning

Cold room sizing starts from the load, not from the room dimensions. List what enters the room each day, at what temperature, and how long it stays; product load is usually the dominant component and it changes with turnover and season. Then add the other components: transmission through panels, door openings and the air exchanged each time, people working inside, lighting, and any evaporator fan heat. Confirm the room ambient outside the panels, because a room built into a hot kitchen or an unshaded yard faces a different load from one inside an air conditioned store. State the internal dimensions, the clear height under the ceiling and the racking or shelving plan, since usable volume depends on how the room is filled. If the room will be expanded later, say so at the planning stage, because panel layout and system capacity are easier to allow for at the start than to change afterwards.

Panel, door and floor boundaries

The boundary of the room decides how well it holds temperature and how easily it is cleaned. Confirm the panel type and thickness proposed for the duty and the ambient conditions, and how panels join and seal at corners, ceiling and floor. For freezer duty, the floor is part of the insulation system: discuss whether an insulated floor with a vapor barrier is required or whether the room sits on an existing slab, because floor ice and heave are difficult to correct later. Confirm the door type, opening width and whether it is hinged or sliding, plus how the door closes and how the frame is heated on a freezer room. Check the threshold, ramp and any floor level change, since trolleys and pallets have to cross it. Ask how the room is cleaned and what the panel and floor finishes tolerate, and confirm which areas are sealed against water and pests. Refrigeration system, placement and drainage

Confirm where the refrigeration system sits before the room is built, because the decision affects noise, heat and pipe runs. An integral or monoblock arrangement keeps refrigerant inside the room package and simplifies installation, while a remote condensing unit moves heat and noise away from the room but needs plant space, pipe routing and site work. State the ambient temperature where a remote unit would stand, indoors or outdoors, and whether it is sheltered. Ask how defrost is handled for the duty, where melt water goes, and how the drain is protected from freezing. Confirm the pipe run length the manufacturer accepts between the evaporator and the condensing unit, and how pipes are insulated and supported. Plan service access to both ends of the system, including space to remove a fan or a coil. Commissioning, handover and compliance

A cold room is handed over as a working system, so plan the commissioning steps and the records that come with them. Confirm how the room is pulled down to its set point, how door alignment and gasket sealing are checked, and how the controls are set so staff cannot change them without authority. Ask whether alarms are local only or can be routed to a person, and what monitoring the operator will keep.
